Today may be April Fool’s, but this new trailer for The Suicide Squad is no joke.
After word from theatergoers came last night that a new trailer for Warner Bros.’ superhero smash ‘em up was playing in front of screenings of Godzilla vs. Kong (our review is here), filmmaker James Gunn took to Twitter today to share the new trailer for everyone eagerly anticipating the film’s August 6th release in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.
Written and directed by Gunn, the film will bring back members of the critically derided 2016 film Suicide Squad while also introducing new cast members including Idris Elba, John Cena, Peter Capaldi, Pete Davidson, and Sylvester Stallone as the voice of a man-eating fish-human hybrid named King Shark. Margot Robbie is returning in her popular role as Harley Quinn, joined by other returnees Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, and Jai Courtney.
The new trailer is coming less than a week after the debut of the film’s red band trailer dominated the social media scene as people expressed their enthusiasm for seeing Gunn’s take on the property. When asked why the new trailer so soon after the first one dropped Gunn responded, “I was firm in not wanting to make two trailers exactly the same. That bugs me when they do that. If we’re going to ask fans to watch TWO, let’s give them a reason to do so, focusing on different aspects of our film.”
You can catch the new trailer on Gunn’s Twitter account here, where he shared this statement: “Although it’s April Fool’s, the only joke here is on the supervillains who agreed to work for Amanda Waller. Brand new #TheSuicideSquad trailer which dropped last night exclusively in theaters! Meet us in theaters August 6!”
