One of the biggest surprises of Wicker is just how much fun it is. That fun isn’t just something viewers experience, as I learned when talking to the movie’s stars, Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård. They had a blast making this film, as did pretty much everyone involved. You can see it too in the final product, which is an absolute hoot. Watching a man, albeit a Wicker Husband, and his kind treatment of a woman, his wife the Fisherwoman, absolutely destabilize a village, is a satirical delight. So, getting to chat about it was a joy. With Wicker now in theaters, I’m thrilled to share my discussion with Colman and Skarsgård.
In my review of the film (here), I spoke of Colman and Skarsgård’s performances like so:
Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård, despite the makeup and visual effects needs to create the Wicker Husband, share a wonderful chemistry. Colman is unsurprisingly great, giving as good as she gets in the early scenes, with a foul mouth that’s a consistent riot. When the romance enters into things, she’s more than equipped to ace the drama, as you might imagine. Skarsgård has a tricky role, given that he’s essentially playing a Pinocchio type, but he makes the role his own. Part of it is the sexual nature, but also the matter of fact nature with which he sees gender relations, further scandalizing the town.
Below, you can see my conversation with Colman and Skarsgård. With limited time, we couldn’t get too deep on the flick, but I do think we made good use of the short slot. The focus is on the fun and joy that making Wicker entailed. Not only did Colman and Skarsgård seem eager to say how much they enjoyed making the film, they also let me know how so much of the rest of the cast and crew did, too. Given that the movie has been amassing fans since it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival back in January. Here in late October, it’s now unspooling for audiences, who are in for a wild treat. Don’t miss this one, folks.
