Universal Pictures dropped the first full trailer today for its highly anticipated Christmas release, News of the World, starring Tom Hanks and directed by Paul Greengrass. The movie marks the reunion of Hanks and Greengrass, who last worked together on their 2013 Best Picture-nominated Captain Phillips.
In the first Western in Hanks’ long career, he plays a Civil War veteran, recently widowed, who travels from town to town, reading newspapers out loud in order to spread word of what’s happening in the world. During his travels, he crosses paths with a 10-year-old girl, played by Helena Zengel, who has just been released from being held hostage by a tribe of Indians. He feels a sense of responsibility to look out for her, and the two form a bond as they journey across a young land filled with obstacles and danger.
Greengrass himself, along with Luke Davies, adapted the screenplay from Paulette Jiles’ novel. Greengrass is a director not known for sentiment but is extremely comfortable with action. His pairing with Hanks, an actor who is as beloved as any actor has ever been because of his ability to play the everyman and to mine emotion from any circumstance, is one that promises a unique blend of artistic craft with emotive performance that just might be the perfect elixir for 2020.
Universal is still sticking with a December 25th release, in theaters only, for News of the World. See the full trailer below:
