Interview: Talking ‘The Scout’ with Filmmaker Paula González-Nasser and Star Mimi Davila

Whenever an independent film is made about the industry itself, I’m always fascinated to see what the folks involved can do with limited resources. Audiences don’t always respond to movies about movies, for example, but often it feels like half measures. That’s certainly not the case with The Scout, an indie that made its debut previously at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival last year. Filmmaker Paula González-Nasser and star Mimi Davila certainly are able to do a lot with a little, as you’ll hear about below. With the flick hitting theaters on Friday, I’m happy to present a conversation with González-Nasser and Davila.

For those unaware, The Scout is a New York City set character study centering on Sofia (Davila), a location scout who needs to find the perfect interiors for a new television pilot being shot. Of course, what she’s really searching for is more insular and esoteric. González-Nasser wrote and directed based on her own experiences as a longtime location scout, so it has a real lived in feeling.

Below, you can hear my conversation with González-Nasser and Davila. They were certainly eager to chat and help put their film on everyone’s radars, so we had plenty of time to chat. The movie is an easy one to discuss, and both of these female filmmakers are full of interesting tidbits. There’s a few really fun stories here within, as well as a real inspirational bent. Listening to them talk about their movie, you’ll almost certainly want to make your own. I saw the flick back at Tribeca last year, but now that it’s finally being released, The Scout is a fascinating little indie that’s well worth your time.
