Robert Eggers to Adapt ‘Romeo and Juliet’ as His Next Film

Now this is an announcement nobody could see coming. Robert Eggers has so far been tackling darkness, monsters, and horror throughout his career. Nosferatu was a surprise hit, while Werwulf is one of this winter’s most anticipated titles. For his next movie, however, he’s adapting something quite different…Romeo and Juliet. More below.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Focus Features has won the bidding war for Eggers’ adaptation, which will be his third collaboration with the distributor. Romeo and Juliet will be his next directorial project once Werwulf releases, and as you might expect, Eggers will have his cast speak in Olde English for this one. Stay tuned for lots more on this film, as it’s suddenly about as interesting a version of William Shakespeare‘s play as we’ve had in some time.
