One of the hallmarks of Laika animation, beyond its impeccable stop motion visuals, is strong voice work. Their films are made with incredible care, obviously, and that extends to the voice performances contained within. With Wildwood, the movie has even more than usual, as young stars Peyton Elizabeth Lee and Jacob Tremblay led the way. I’d spoken to Tremblay before (here for a previous animated turn in Pixar’s Luca), but today, you can see my chat with both Lee and Tremblay, continuing coverage the film after yesterday’s published discussion with director Travis Knight (here). There’s more to come, too, so be on the lookout for those as well. For now, though, Lee and Tremblay are here to talk about voicing Laika characters!
In my review of the movie last week (here), I praised Lee and Tremblay’s voice acting like so:
The voice work here is very solid, as everyone is very committed to helping bring the world of Wildwood to life. Peyton Elizabeth Lee and Jacob Tremblay are best in show, giving the human characters their literal humanity. They invest you in the story while never forgetting the stakes here. They get some funny moments, sure, but this is overall serious work.
Below, you can see my conversation with Lee and Tremblay. With both having done voice work before, I wanted to use my limited time to get into being relative veterans, compared to some of the other cast. That led us into what acting while growing up is like, especially for Tremblay, who recorded his dialogue before his voice literally changed. It’s a nice chat, one that should make you even more interested in seeing Wildwood, if you haven’t given it a shot just yet.
Here now is my interview with Wildwood stars Peyton Elizabeth Lee and Jacob Tremblay. Enjoy:
Wildwood is in theaters now!
