It’s time to meet TV’s newest law enforcement agents: the Hollingsworth family, led by Peter Krause and Hope Davis. Tonight’s premiere of Line of Fire gave us the perfect introduction to what we can expect from the procedural, which will tackle cases for the FBI, U.S. Marshals, Secret Service, and Department of Justice.
Davis plays Jane, a U.S. Marshal, while Krause takes on the role of Mike, part of the Secret Service. While the two were married and have three kids together, we find out in the premiere that they have separated. However, it’s not as simple as that.
“What seems really clear to me, Pete, you may contradict me if you wish, is that these two, they really love each other, and their breakup was really kind of a tragedy for both of them, and that in the best of all worlds they would somehow find their way back to each other,” Davis shared.
“I think that that’s part of the extended story of the television series, and that it’s a gray area. The rift between them is very complicated. It’s very complicated, and it, obviously, involves Jack,” Krause added. “That’s what came between us, and it’s really important in terms of what Joshua Safran has talked about. Jane, the character that Hope plays, federal marshal, really fell in love with Jack, a child I had from a previous relationship, and led to, really, our marriage and our other three children. So, in some ways, Jack was sort of the starting point for Jane; this is what Josh has said to me and Hope, that for her, Jack is this very, very important person in her life.”
The first episode ends with a major cliffhanger, and it seems that will only continue throughout the season. Davis explained, “We have our cases per week, but we have an overarching, really kind of a huge mystery that the whole family is involved in and that really does carry you from episode to episode. And so, for the people that love to just tune in and see something cut and dry and finished by the end, they can do that, but for the people that really want to see the whole thing play out over a season, we’ve got that for them.”
Krause concluded, “This is a story about a family, and so we will be seeing Jane and Mike’s relationship play out. We’ll also see what is the truth about what’s going on with Jack, and because of the various jobs that we have, we’re also going to see longer, extended lines in the world of crime, in the world of politics, the goings-on of Washington DC, and beyond. I like the longer stories myself.”
