Interview: Talking ‘5 Things’ and Convenience Store Fun with Jay Mewes

I’ve enjoyed the antics of Jay Mewes his entire career, ever since Kevin Smith put him in front of a camera in Clerks. Hell, since then, I’ve not only gotten a kick out of him in Smith’s movies, or when they’ve podcasted together, I’ve gotten a lifetime of laughs out of Smith talking about early Mewes tales. Now, Mewes himself has done a role reversal, as he’s got his own very unique interview show in 5 Things with Jay Mewes, as well as a Murdoch Mysteries rewatch podcast. The premise of the show is quite simple, really, as he and a guest go up and down the aisles of a convenience store, picking out five items that mean something to the person, with stories to follow. Recently, we spent some time on Zoom talking about 5 Things, which you can currently find on YouTube. Today, our chat comes your way.

Below, you can see my conversation with Mewes. I’d previously interviewed him before, as part of the cast of Clerks III (that interview can be found here), so it actually felt very fun to go from Clerks to 5 Things. You’ll see us talk about how he’s developed an interview style, the story Smith told that Mewes had never heard before, and even the things Mewes himself would pick if he had been a guest on this show. I had a blast talking with him, especially given how easygoing he is about it all. Of course, check out all of his work and podcasts, as well as his comedy tour dates. For me, 5 Things is now a must watch on YouTube, and once you check it out, it will likely be for you all as well.

Here now is my interview with 5 Things host Jay Mewes. Enjoy:
