Universal To Extend Theatrical Windows for 2026 and Beyond

After a very long period of sending most of their films to video-on-demand 17 days after their cinema release, Universal is changing course, effective immediately, with the release of Reminders of Him this weekend. The New York Times reports that the movie studio will now play its upcoming slate of films released this year for a minimum of five weekends before moving to the traditional 45-day window in 2027.

This, of course, excludes the release of Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey, which will play in cinemas for at least 100 days. The Focus Features slate is also excluded from this announcement, with most releases sticking to the 17-day model.

In a statement, NBCUniversal’s Donna Langley said that “Our windowing strategy has always been designed to evolve with the marketplace, but we firmly believe in the primacy of theatrical exclusivity and working closely with our exhibition partners to support a healthy, sustainable theatrical ecosystem.”

Adding to this, she also reiterated that “Universal remains a theatrical-first studio. That’s proven by the breadth of our slate, our commitment to our filmmakers, and the ongoing investments we make in the creative community.”

For theatrical exhibitors, this announcement comes as wonderful news. On Twitter, AMC CEO Adam Aron praised Langley, stating, “I cannot say enough good things about Donna Langley’s leadership of Universal. First and foremost, she is a superb film maker [sic]. Add to that her grace, business acumen and courage in making important decisions that have real ramifications supporting the entire movie ecosystem.”

Reminders of Him releases on Friday, while their next title, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, promises to be a massive hit and will bow out on April 1.
