I always take notice when Haley Lu Richardson appears in something. In the case of Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, she’s getting a chance to play against type and play a role very different than usual for her, with strong results. No matter what she’s in, I’m usually impressed, and this is no exception. Yesterday, I shared my conversation with director Gore Verbinski (here) about the film. Today, it’s Richardson’s turn to discuss the flick.
My review (here) of the movie includes the following about the cast, including Richardson:
Sam Rockwell leads the way here with a very fun gonzo performance, one capable matched by different registers from Haley Lu Richardson and Juno Temple. Rockwell gets to go wild, really leaning in to how offbeat this time traveler is. It’s not subtle work, to be sure, but it is effective, and effectively amusing. Richardson gets to play against type here, with her character evolving throughout. By the time you learn what makes her so special, she’s become the most interesting part of the film. As for Temple, she has the emotional core of the movie in a way, which she handles with aplomb. Among the other teammates, Zazie Beets and Michael Peña stand out the most, though both could have stood to have had more to do. Supporting players here also include Tom Taylor and Artie Wilkinson-Hunt, among others.
Below, you can see my chat with Richardson. We had limited time to talk, but still managed to work a lot in, while also just enjoying each other’s company. Not only do we get into what appealed to her about Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, we touch on Support the Girls, The White Lotus, and more, including her just published book of poetry. She’s a talented young actress still on the way up, with this film full evidence of that. Once you see it this weekend, you’ll understand.
Here now is my interview with Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die co-star Haley Lu Richardson. Enjoy:
