An Updated Ranking of the Best Performances from Scarlett Johansson So Far

Scarlett Johansson is one of my favorite actresses in the business. She only recently has started fully being given credit as a great performer, but early on, she was seen as a potential great. That promise has been in evidence for years to me, as well as others, but her dual Oscar nominations did help break that dam. I spoke to Johansson here briefly back during the Asteroid City press tour, but I’ve been a fan since the early days. With Jurassic World Rebirth hitting theaters today, I figured it was a good time to take another look at her best performances to date.

In my review of Jurassic World Rebirth (here), I said this about her newest work:

Scarlett Johansson gets to lead the way, while Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey round out the overqualified trio. Bailey and Johansson have a nice chemistry and are playing characters familiar to this franchise. Johansson especially gets to show off her considerable action hero chops. She fares the best here, probably due to familiarity with big budget CGI. She’s having fun and never looks out of place.

Last year, in my review of Fly Me to the Moon (here), I had the following to say about her and her co-star:

Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum bring some real charm as well as star power to the picture. They have nice chemistry, both characters are enjoyable on their own, but better when together. These are movie stars in the true sense of the word, elevating the work.

Below, you can see my favorite Johansson performances so far. There’s a big three for me, and it’s her, Lost in Translation, and Under the Skin. Those are pretty universally acclaimed turns for her. What about the likes of Marriage Story and Match Point? Jojo Rabbit and any of her turns as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Does Fly Me to the Moon crack the lineup? Well, you’ll just have to see below. I do think my list is a touch different than most, but that’s just my two cents. You’ll be able to chime in over in the comments sections, of course…
