Box Office Report for the Week of February 2

After a relatively quiet start to the 2025 moviegoing season, DreamWorks Animation hits big with the first mainstream animated production of the year in Dog Man. An offshoot of Captain Underpants, the Peter Hastings-directed spinoff already made its $40 million budget back, with a $36.0 million domestic tally and an overall cume of $40.6 million. After seeing the movie, I was wary of its box-office prospects, especially in the wake of Companion’s release, which its marketing touted to experience without having seen a piece of marketing. However, it seems that families are overwhelmingly enjoying a truly fun piece of escapism, which seems very important to have in the “interesting times” we live in.

As for Companion, the good news is that the film made all of its money back, due to a relatively low budget of $10 million, snagging $9.5 million domestically for a global tally of $15 million. Whether or not it will pick up any legs in the weeks to come remains to be seen, but February has several hotly anticipated titles that could signal a return for both blockbusters and smaller-scale films in a big way.

Oscar hopefuls A Complete Unknown and The Brutalist continue to do well in the top ten, respectively, grossing $2.1 million and $1.8 million domestically. With controversy after controversy surrounding Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez and its star Karla Sofia Gascón, the Best Picture winner is still anybody’s game. The Brutalist is still making an impact in cinemas after its wide release, while A Complete Unknown has been legging out ever since Christmas, and has now grossed $87.4 million worldwide.

With the Critics Choice Awards occurring next week after several postponements, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a boost in interest for several Best Picture nominees that are getting re-released in cinemas as Oscar season ramps up. It may (likely) be over for Emilia Pérez’s chances of winning Best Picture (I don’t believe it’ll go home empty-handed, though there is a possibility if Gascón continues with her ‘apology’ letters that get worse and worse with each passing day), but for other films still playing in cinemas, the race to win has only just begun.

February should be a relatively fun month this year, with Captain America: Brave New World, Becoming Led Zeppelin, Heart Eyes, Paddington in Peru, and The Monkey being hotly-anticipated titles that moviegoers are eager to see.
