Interview: Chatting About the Rare Female Lens Given to Kink with ‘Babygirl’ Filmmaker Halina Reijn

One of the hallmarks of filmmaker Halina Reijn‘s career so far is that her work generates discussion. Bodies Bodies Bodies (which I reviewed here back when it came out) certainly did that, and now it’s happening on an even bigger scale with Babygirl. The film marks a major step forward for the writer/director, as we see her working with an even bigger cast this time around, led by Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson, and Antonio Banderas. Hot on the heels of the movie opening wide, I spent some time this week on Zoom talking to her about how this specific approach to the material of the flick is so unique. Today, I’m thrilled to present our conversation to you. For my money, it’s a real good one.

In my review (found here), I had the following to say about her work, in part:

Filmmaker Halina Reijn makes Babygirl a very different work than Bodies Bodies Bodies, but at the same time, it’s not hard to see that this is the same writer/director at play. Reijn is clearly fascinated by the premise, as well as her central characters, so there’s a lot more discussion of things than you might realize. It’s hardly a sex-filled film, even if it’s an overtly sexual one.

Below, you can hear my chat with Reijn. It’s a really enjoyable conversation, one that’s incredibly unpretentious about the film, but also deep when it comes to the issues at hand. Reijn is quick to laugh, which makes sense if you watch her movies, but it’s also clearly that she’s considered the impact of her work quite a bit. We get into the kink of it all, expressing sexuality, and also how it’s always better for your work to be discussed, good or bad. I had a blast talking to her and I suspect you’ll enjoy the discussion as well. Babygirl is in theaters now and is definitely worth checking out.
