As Conclave is positioning itself to be a major Awards contender, Deadline has learned that Edward Berger is planning for The Barrier to be his next movie, which will be an adaptation of a short story by McMillan Hedges.
Austin Butler is in talks to lead the project, which is being discussed as Interstellar meets Top Gun, even though details of its plot are kept under wraps. Hedges is set to write the screenplay, with Butler also executive producing.
Ever since Germany’s Oscar win for All Quiet on the Western Front, Berger has been keeping himself busy, not only with Conclave, but with a new movie starring Colin Farrell and Tilda Swinton titled The Ballad of a Small Player, which may hit Netflix next year. The filmmaker is currently in post-production for this specific project.
Meanwhile, Butler is fresh off the heels of his Oscar-nominated performance as Elvis Presley with important roles in Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune: Part Two and Jeff Nichols‘ The Bikeriders. He is now working with Darren Aronofsky on his upcoming Caught Stealing, which will also star Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, and Bad Bunny.
As we wait for Berger and Butler’s next projects, look out for Joey’s interview with the Conclave director about the movie on Awards Radar tomorrow!
