Sunday Scaries: ‘Terrifier 3’ Firmly Establishes Art the Clown as a High End Horror Villain

Cineverse Entertainment

The Sunday Scaries are upon us once again! Yes, as the weekend concludes, most of us feel an oncoming sense of anticipatory dread about the week ahead. Anxiety about work manifests itself into a feeling that’s known as the Sunday Scaries. However, we at Awards Radar are here to combat that, by taking back the name. Now, we want you think about a horror-centric piece on the site when you hear the term. So, let us continue on with another installment of the Awards Radar Sunday Scaries! Today, we’re again talking about our buddy Art the Clown…

Terrifier 3 is now in theaters, expected to be number one at the box office, and see the horror franchise on very sturdy ground. The bloody adventures of Art the Clown are being embraced by audiences, potentially even beyond gorehounds, so this fright flick is really flexing its muscles. For me, that’s a good thing too, since I’m excited to have Art as a new horror movie monster. He’s not going anywhere, either.

My review of the film, found here, includes the following opening:

When Terrifier 2 came out, it was an unexpectedly epic sequel to the tiny independent horror film Terrifier. Raising the stakes with a higher budget and bigger ambitions, the second installment became notable for inspiring walkouts. Now, with Terrifier 3, lots of the movie’s marketing is focusing on fainting spells and walkouts. How is it as a film, though? Well, it’s pretty good if you love gore with your horror. The flick definitely delivers.

Terrifier 3 is very successful at what it sets out to do. The franchise is very much only for hardcore horror buffs and gore hounds, but it’s undeniable that those into the concept are going to be satisfied. It’s a series that knows who to cater to and does it almost with surgical precision. I had a bloody good time once again.

Earlier this year, I had this to say about the continuation of the franchise in a previous Sunday Scaries:

The Terrifier franchise was never even supposed to be a thing. The original Terrifier was just a little horror film, but it managed to catch on within the indie horror scene. Art the Clown as a new movie monster captured gorehounds’ imaginations, leading to Terrifier 2 having bigger scale and a larger budget. It’s a throwback series, almost gleeful in its carnage, but with some practical old school makeup really giving it some personality. So, I’m hyped for more with the upcoming Terrifier 3.

My prior review of Terrifier 2 (here) has the following to say, in case you never gave it a look:

Art the Clown is back! After making a memorable starring debut in Terrifier (technically he appeared in the anthology film All Hallows Eve, but played by a different actor), the murderous clown is returning to take his place as the next great movie monster. Terrifier 2 injects steroids into the tiny horror flick that came before it, making a slasher epic. The bold move results in more gore, more kills, and more scares, but also added mythology and supernatural elements that just don’t really work. You almost never get two hour plus horror films, and this doesn’t earn that length, but it does have a lot of what you want out of a Terrifier sequel, that’s for sure.

Terrifier 2 is on the extreme side, but only really if you don’t know what you’re getting into. Anyone familiar with Art’s previous murderous antics will be prepared for the carnage at hand. So, if you’re concerned about reports of people passing out at screenings, just question if they went in blind or not. Sure, there’s some real gnarly murders here, but nothing so beyond the pale as to have someone require medical attention.

Terrifier 3

A third installment is now coming, with the creative forces all together. Morevoer, it’s going to be a holiday fright flick, which is all kinds of fun. I’m pumped. I even spoke to the series creator/filmmaker Damien Leone hereTerrifier 3 will see him working with his biggest budget to date, teasing some real mind-blowing stuff. I think Leone has created something really unique here, and the performance by David Howard Thornton as Art is truly special, in a deranged way. Horror fans should be in for a treat this holiday season.

As you can see above, I was very excited, and as the review states, I was more than satisfied. Now, we have a likely Terrifier 4 coming our way. Art’s battles with Sienna (played by Lauren LaVera) are becoming more and more epic, so the next time they butt heads, I’ll be eager to see what happens. Filmmaker Damien Leone is telling a very unique story, so as long as he keeps doing that, he’s got a dedicated viewer.

In particular, this funnier yet still savage take on Art the Clown has me tickled pink (even if he’d prefer red). Terrifier 3 was a good recalibration after Terrifier 2 was bigger, but also overstuffed a bit. Leone found the right balance here, which bodes very well for a fourth installment. When that comes, we’ll be hear to cover it, so sit tight…

Stay tuned for more on the Terrifier franchise as it continues to grow!
