‘Emilia Pérez’ Submits as Adapted Screenplay for the Academy Awards

Emilia Pérez is likely going to be a big Academy Award contender. Almost anyone who sees the film raves about it, and even those who don’t, like our own Joey Magidson, reviewed it here and still liked it. So, that’s a promising start. One of the movie’s question marks has been which category its script would compete in. Despite having some pre-existing material as inspiration, Netflix initially was planning to put it into Best Original Screenplay. Now, that ran the risk of being switched by the Oscars to Best Adapted Screenplay, and when that happens during voting, accidental snubs are a possibility. Well, that potential issue is being headed off at the pass.

According to Variety, Netflix has made the switch and the film will compete for an Oscar nomination in Adapted Screenplay, not Original Screenplay. The category is much more favorable to the movie as well, so this could lead to at the very least a nomination for Emilia Pérez, if not a win. Stay tuned to find out.
