Netflix has given Pablo Larraín‘s latest movie, Maria, a prime Awards season release date! Written by Steven Knight, the film stars Angelina Jolie, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Alba Rohrwacher, Pierfrancesco Favino, and Valeria Golino.
The movie will be released in select theatres on November 27, before making its way to Netflix on December 11, giving a significant push for its Oscar chances. Below is the plot synopsis:
“Academy Award®-winner Angelina Jolie is Maria Callas, one of the most iconic performers of the 20th century in acclaimed director Pablo Larrain’s operatic MARIA. The film follows the American-Greek soprano as she retreats to Paris after a glamorous and tumultuous life in the public eye. MARIA reimagines the legendary soprano in her final days as the diva reckons with her identity and life.”
Our editor-in-chief, Joey Magidson, saw the film at the Telluride Film Festival and praised Jolie’s performance, stating, “Her heart and soul is in this performance, combing the depths of Callas to bring out the passion for song, the deep sadness, as well as the contemplation of a life coming to a close before its time. She underwent vocal training to be able to do parts of the 1977 arias, which really does mix with actual Callas recordings well. Jolie, quite simply, is splendid and stunning.” You can read his full review of the movie here.
