Interview: Chris Glimsdale Discusses the Thought Behind the Hair Stylings of ‘Fargo’

What goes into developing some of Fargo‘s very original characters extends way beyond the script. Three-time Emmy Award Nominee, Chris Glimsdale, makes her contribution takes place with the hairstyling of each character. The Hair Department Head has been working on the series since season one, adding her touch to some of the best characters on television – one hair at a time.

Glimsdale spoke with Awards Radar about her work on Fargo and what her goals were for some of the characters.

You’ve worked on four seasons, how did you get involved with Fargo?

I started on the first season not knowing really what it was about except for the Fargo movie and it intrigued me I was super excited to work with Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman  ..the scripts where amazing and creative. Billy Bob’s bad hair cut with dark hair and then totally changing his look to a put together full grey hair for years later along with all these amazing characters built from Fargo, the come overs, to a women stuck in the 80s so much detail put in each person to create the image of there characters need to make the look happen texture to soften and Noah Hawley creative mind what an amazing place to get into ..always thinking outside the box.

For this season, we have to start with Juno. What did you want to say with Dot’s hair style?
How did you accomplish this?

Dot is a woman that is trying to not be seen blend and in so her look was one of a woman who didn’t do much a women of no real style by yet in disguise to fit in with society. We left her hair un-produced , fly ways ,natural movement, we decided on a medium tone light brown  which didn’t have much flare so that she blended in never doing much with her hairstyle, keeping it very simple.

Gave us the look of a busy mom who had no time for herself just her family but still always aware of what’s around her.

Is there a difference between the woman and the tiger?

The tiger is in her soul .. we did still needed her to be under cover in society. But there was a slight tightening and put togetherness and strength

Then you have Jennifer Jason Leigh whose Lorraine feels like she would be more accustomed to a NY board meeting.
What was your approach for her?

We worked on keeping her very put together a women that went to the salon for a blow out regularly. Judy Durbacz a team member did a wonderful job of doing so ..

“FARGO” — “The Tender Trap” — Year 5, Episode 6 (Airs December 19) Pictured: Sam Spruell as Ole Munch. CR: Michelle Faye/FX

And for Ole Munch, there must be a great story behind your work with him.
What were your goals and inspiration?  What do you feel the end results speak about the character?

Ole this is a great example of Noah mind this is a character that is 300 years old but has no sense of society just is believes. Has gone though may year. He self cuts his hair to get it out of the way. This created the odd shape not a person of selfcare at all. We did a few styles but this odd look really was it looking back at the ancient style and interesting people in the world present living and past this made Ole ..along with all the text of makeup and amazing wardrobe. Sam Spruell himself bring forward all Ole mannerisms.

Were there any other characters whose hair design stories stand out this season?

Everyone get a great deal of detail from Deputy Witt Farr a man that did go to the Barber shop being a work alcoholic and not spending the time on himself. So no edging up or clean lines .

To Indira the falling apart police officer tire back and messy  to the composed put together women with the refined clean look when live changes for her working for Lorraine

Every last character has little thing to bring them alive and real..

What are some of the challenges you faced this season that may not be so obvious to the viewer?

I think it is the hours that get put into creating to realism the attention to detail. By watch real people and there looks I am always looking and taking pictures of people..

Who has been your favorite character to design hair for over those seasons?

I am going to say all of them because we all work very had at keep the character alive and building them with detail the one that change the most from there every day like and go outside their safe zone.
