Quentin Dupieux’s ‘The Second Act’ to Open 2024 Cannes Festival

The 77th edition of the Cannes International Film Festival is opening up with the latest from one of the most acclaimed French filmmakers working today, Quentin Dupieux, with his newest feature, The Second Act.

Written and directed by Dupieux, the film will star Léa Seydoux, Raphaël Quénard, Vincent Lindon, and Louis Garrel and will be presented out of competition through its premiere on May 14.

Here is the plot synopsis:

“Florence wants to introduce David, the man she’s madly in love with, to her father Guillaume. But David isn’t attracted to Florence and wants to throw her into the arms of his friend Willy. The four characters meet in a restaurant in the middle of nowhere.”

Through its press release, the Festival praised Dupieux for being a filmmaker who “embraces freedom – in tone, form and subject” and “has freed himself from convention through an already extensive body of work (13 feature films in 17 years), establishing the absurd as a genre in its own right and shaking up all the others – of which The Second Act is a perfect case in point!”

They also noted that the movie will follow the thematic underpinnings of his two previous features, Yannick and Daaaaaali!, as a new “mise en abyme around acting.” While the latter film has yet to receive a North American release, Yannick is now available to stream on MUBI.
