Interview: Annette Bening and Jodie Foster Discuss Teaming Up for ‘Nyad’

It goes without saying that anything that brings together Annette Bening and Jodie Foster is worth your time. After all, they’re two of the best actresses alive. So, Nyad was always an intriguing cinematic proposition for me. I saw and enjoyed it at the Telluride Film Festival back in September. Now, as the movie has made its way first to theaters and now Netflix, the opportunity was provided for a quick bit of time with the pair. I’d previously spoken to Foster here about The Mauritanian, but today, you can see me discussing this flick with both Bening and Foster,

Back at Telluride (here), I wrote the following about Bening and Foster in Nyad:

Annette Bening may well be in the Oscar conversation here once again. She doesn’t shy away from the off-putting aspects of her title character, which helps to set her apart. Bening makes it very much about the passion of accomplishing a dream, but she doesn’t ever let Nyad off easily. Her chemistry with Jodie Foster is fantastic, which keeps things from ever going too far. Foster is a ray of sunshine here.

Below, you can see my quick chat with Bening and Foster. We had very limited time, but still managed to enjoy it. They were taken by my Jane Campion t-shirt, so that kicked things off on a good note. Nyad presents such a physical opportunity for them, Bening especially, that I wanted to hear about that as well. They’re very good sports with our short amount of time, so we got more in than you might have expected. Definitely give this a look, but most definitely give the film a look, now that it’s on Netflix. As far as inspirational true life sports stories go, this is about as pleasing as you’ll see this year.

I watched NYAD last night. I enjoyed it. The performances were so lived in by Bening and Foster it felt real. You could feel and understand what both of them feared if she gave up or if she didn’t make it but it wouldn’t be the same if they didn’t do it together.
