Focus Features Picks Up ‘The Bikeriders’ After Disney No Longer Plans to Release Film

While The Bikeriders was initially positioned as a major contender for this year’s Awards season, Disney surprisingly pulled the film from release due, at the time, to the SAG-AFTRA strike. The studio still planned to release the movie to qualify for awards consideration but chose not to move forward with releasing it after the strike concluded, despite a trailer, poster, and multiple festival screenings of the film already done.

Reviews even started to come out during the festival circuit. Our editor-in-chief, Joey Magidson, had the chance to see the movie during that time and praised Jodie Comer‘s performance in The Bikeriders as “a force of nature.” You can read his full thoughts on the film here.

Now, Focus Features has snagged the Jeff Nichols movie from Disney and are planning a 2024 release. It will likely make its splash during next year’s Awards season, as it was already positioned as such a few months ago. No specific release date has been planned, but Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski said that the studio is “delighted to add such a riveting project to next year’s strong slate of films. We look forward to once again working alongside New Regency and reuniting with the multi-talented Jeff Nichols on another one of his visionary projects. This film exemplifies our commitment to collaborate with the industry’s best filmmakers and production partners, and we can’t wait to build upon its early success to draw audiences into this poignant film bolstered by powerful performances from an incredible cast.”

Additionally, New Regency’s chairman and CEO Yariv Milchan said that the company is “excited to team up again with our Focus Features partners and look forward to another successful collaboration. And we couldn’t be prouder of The Bikeriders, Jeff Nichols and all the talent he has brought together to create this truly exceptional film.”

New Regency previously partnered with Focus Features on Robert Eggers’ The Northman in 2022, and it seemed like the safest bet that the company would be taking The Bikeriders to Focus with such a strong relationship already built. Keep an eye out for its new release date as more information will come soon.
