Interview: Milo Ventimiglia on Pivoting to Something New with ‘The Company You Keep’

ABC’s new spy caper The Company You Keep finds a con man, Charlie (Milo Ventimiglia), and a CIA agent, Emma (Catherine Haena Kim), in an unlikely romance that is doomed to get them both in trouble. The intersection of their personal and professional lives becomes a dangerous minefield for them to navigate as they remain deeply attracted to each other despite their sins of omission.

Awards Radar had the chance to speak with Ventimiglia about making such a quick transition to a new TV series after spending six years playing Jack on This Is Us:

“John Chu, who was also an EP, a friend of mine, that I’d known for years and years, he brought the project to us. The setup of family, the setup of relationship, the setup of fun and cost and heist, it just fit this, I’ll call it a wonderful placement of what I think we as a company and me as an actor were wanting to do in being back on television. For as wonderful as This Is Us was, there was so much emotion, and there was a very real element to it, that I wanted to make sure the next role, the next job, was a bit of a departure.”

Addressing Charlie’s wardrobe, Ventimiglia had plenty to share:

“It’s funny, because I think a lot of people, when they get up for the day and get cleaned up, they put one set of clothes on, they get home, maybe they put some comfys on, and then they’ll crawl into pajamas. I think, in a given day, I’m changing clothes about six or seven or eight times. I don’t mind it. Also, in how we built Charlie, Hala Bahmet, our costume designer, we worked together on This Is Us for so many years, I just said, we’re building him unremarkable, we’re building him very simple. But, still, within that, you’ve got to find a neighborhood guy. You’ve got to find a guy who owns a bar. You’ve got to find a guy who’s comfortable in a t-shirt as well as a several thousand-dollar tuxedo when he’s pulling off a con.”
