‘She-Hulk’ Episode Nine Recap: “Whose Show Is This?”

*Warning: This piece contains spoilers for episode nine of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law*

The season finale of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law begins with Jen Walters (Tatiana Maslany) waking up in a DODC cell after the brutal events of last week’s episode. She accepts a plea deal, which prevents her from turning into She-Hulk again. Jen also loses her job and, strapped for money, moves back in with her parents.

Meanwhile, Nikki (Ginger Gonzaga) and Pug (Josh Segarra) infiltrate an Intelligencia event. Nikki sends Pug undercover to learn more about the site and the people running it. While inside, Pug learns that Todd Phelps (Jon Bass), Jen’s crazy obsessive ex from episodes back, is the creator and leader of Intelligencia.

Feeling in need of a mental health break, Jen returns to Emil Blonsky’s (Tim Roth) compound. After wandering around a bit, she enters the ledge and finds the Intelligencia meeting happening. Jen is dismayed to find the event’s motivational speaker is none other than Abomination. At the same time, Nikki enters to retrieve Pug and leave. Right after that, Titania (Jameela Jamil) barges in with motives of her own. In this scramble, Todd injects himself with the blood extracted from Jen in the previous episode and becomes a Hulk himself. Subsequently, Bruce (Mark Ruffalo) crashes in as the Hulk to fight Abomination. Jen breaks the fourth wall, dissatisfied with the direction the finale is going. She escapes from her show and, through the Disney+ menu, enters Marvel Studios: Assembled to look for the writers and change the ending.

Jen finds the writers, but they all tell her that “Kevin” is the one who makes all the decisions and nobody talks to Kevin. Jen breaks through the office and ends up locating K.E.V.I.N., an artificial intelligence. Jen convinces K.E.V.I.N. to make the changes she wants to see in the finale. Jen erases Todd getting Hulk powers, removes Bruce from the fight, changes it to daytime, and adds Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox). Satisfied, she re-enters the show.

Returning, Jen sees Todd getting arrested and tells him that she’ll see him in court. Blonsky is also being arrested, having violated his parole by turning into Abomination. She re-connects with Matt. At a gathering featuring Jen, Matt, and Jen’s whole family, Hulk arrives from the planet Sakaar with his new son, Skaar. Jen is rehired at work and vows to continue doing legal work as well as superhero work.

In a mid-credits scene, Wong (Benedict Wong) breaks Blonsky out of prison.

The season finale of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law brings about a very humorous and satisfying fourth wall breaking conclusion. It continues the show’s tone, but introduces a final third that the word meta would even be too loose to use. Having been a series of ups and downs, episode nine of She-Hulk certainly brings the whole show together and sets up numerous new narratives.
