On Monday night, before my press screening of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, another invite from Disney had arrived. This one was for the debut of the Trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water. Now, I don’t always go to these kinds of press events, but considering it was essentially playing right before the screening, in the same movie theater, the convenience factor made this an easy decision. You can see my thoughts on the Marvel film here, but what of the Avatar sequel? Well, I’ve seen it (more than once, as you’ll find out), so now, time to discuss it…
The Trailer, shown in 3D, played three times in a row, which was a little odd, but hey, it hammered it all home for me. For one, the 3D did look good, as you might expect from James Cameron. The water also looks gorgeous. Aside from that, however, it didn’t really feel or seem like anything new. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it felt more like a reminder that Avatar existed, as opposed to a teaser for the next installment.
So, what is Avatar: The Way of Water actually about? Well, I’m not fully sure. There’s one line of dialogue by Jake Sully, but mostly it’s imagery. There’s more war coming, but any context is still to be revealed. Mostly, it’s setting the mood. In terms of that, it’s successful, with real good looking 3D, but I’m not certain that anyone who hasn’t already been hyped up for this sequel will care too much. Then again, we still have about seven months or so before the film comes out, so there’s plenty of time.
Essentially, this was a tease for what Cameron is cooking up with the Avatar franchise. Presumably, you’ll be able to see it for yourself online soon enough, but for now, it will be attached to screenings in theaters of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Give it a look there and be sure to let me know what you think of it…
Stay tuned for more on Avatar: The Way of Water, including when the Trailer debuts online!
