‘Cruella’ Sequel Officially in the Works at Disney

Disney’s Cruella, directed by Craig Gillespie with a screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, and starring Emma Stone, Emma Thompson, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Mark Strong was released in theatres last Friday and has proven to be quite the hit already.

The film, which tells the origin story of the titular Disney anti-hero portrayed by Stone, managed to rake in an impressive $48.5 million at the box office, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only was it a commercial success, but it was a critical success as well for the most part.

Recently, a Disney spokesperson has stated “We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.”

Because of this, a sequel definitely seemed likely, even if most didn’t expect an announcement quite yet. Well, today, we learned that a sequel to Cruella is officially in the works with Gillespie set to return to the director’s chair and with Fox and McNamara reporting teaming up once more to pen the screenplay.

Naturally, since the sequel is so early in development, plot details are not known at this time, but we do know that Stone will reprise her role as the titular Cruella de Vil.
