Regina King Set to Direct ‘Bitter Root’

Regina King was already a beloved actress, having won 4 Emmys and an Oscar (among many other awards), and then last year she showed the world what she can do as a director with her stirring feature debut One Night in Miami

This skyrocketed King to the top of the in-demand list of directors in Hollywood, with King recently being reported to be on the shortlist of directors wanted by Marvel for the upcoming Blade and Warner Bros./DC for the new Superman film.

Rather than taking on the helm of those projects, King has settled on something decidedly more unique, with Legendary announcing today that they’ve closed a deal for the director to take on directing and producing duties on a feature adaptation of Bitter Root, an Image Comics series created by David F. Walker, Sanford Greene, and Chuck Brown

Reina King will co-produce the project, along with Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian. The script for the film is currently being rewritten by Bryan Edward Hill

Bitter Root is set during the Harlem Renaissance of 1924, and tells the story of a family of monster hunters who join together to face an evil force that attacks New York City. The series received nominations for an Eisner Award for Best New Series and a Ringo Award for Best Series.
