It might have taken a while to get here, but A24’s commitment to giving The Green Knight a full theatrical release is finally coming to fruition, a little over a year since its initial intended release.
Originally set for May 20, 2020, the new film from David Lowery (A Ghost Story, The Old Man and the Gun) is coming out in theaters on July 30, 2021, and the studio has dropped a new trailer to tease its impending arrival.
Starring Dev Patel, the film tells the story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, an Arthurian era tale that brings medieval fantasy into the realm of brooding arthouse filmmaking. A fascinating endeavor by the looks of it, the film co-stars Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sarita Choudhury, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Barry Keoghan, and Ralph Ineson.
Take a look at the film’s official synopsis below:
An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger, and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger. From visionary filmmaker David Lowery comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table.
