Sunday Scaries: What Are You Watching for Spooky Season?

The Sunday Scaries are upon us once again! Yes, as the weekend concludes, most of us feel an oncoming sense of anticipatory dread about the week ahead. Anxiety about work manifests itself into a feeling that’s known as the Sunday Scaries. However, we at Awards Radar are here to combat that, by taking back the name. Now, we want you think about a horror-centric piece on the site when you hear the term. So, let us continue on with another installment of the Awards Radar Sunday Scaries! Today, we’re checking in to see what you’re all watching for spooky season…

Halloween is two weeks away! Among the many fun things about October, for me, chief among them is how we all embrace spooky season movie viewings. Whether it’s new films or old classics, folks tend to dive into horror throughout the month. As we get closer to Halloween, I wanted to mention some of the fright flicks I’ve been watching. Then, hopefully you all can chime in with the scary movies you’ve been taking in, or at least the ones you love around this time of year. It’s a singular month for a certain type of genre film, that’s for sure.

For me, I’m lucky enough to do a weekly movie night with friends/colleagues Mike Ryan and Kate Erbland, and every October, we enter spooky season. The two or three films we watch in a night can run the gamut, but during this month, they’re horror or horror adjacent. Last year for example, we watched a whole range, but the highlights included Body Double, Dr. Giggles, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, The Howling, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers, Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland, and Visiting Hours.

Hellraiser

Last week, this was our triple feature:

The Slumber Party Massacre / Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers / Hellraiser

“Poltergeist” (1982)
Cinematography by Matthew F. Leonetti

Friday night, this was what we ended up doing:

Children of the Corn / Poltergeist / The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2

Now, you can do it your own way, obviously. Our movie night is unique to us, which is how it should be. Some people just let the mood strike them, especially if you have a large 4K/Blu-ray/DVD collection, or access to all of the streaming services. Others follow a template. For example, this is one 31 Days of Halloween horror challenge we talked about back on the Awards Radar Podcast in 2021 when Myles was first doing his 31 Days events:

Of course, you could also opt to go to the theater to see a new release horror movie. Resident Evil is still in theaters and doing great business. Other Mommy just came out as well. This month also features the release of Breeder and Clayface, both of which have a lot of horror potential. So, there’s certainly options!

Now, please do let us know what you’re planning to watch this month for spooky season. Whatever you have in mind, we’re all ears. So, be sure to chime in with your October viewings. The spookier, the better…

Stay tuned for another Sunday Scaries installment next week!
