This evening, the Screen Actors Guild Awards are being broadcast. Sure, it’ll be a pre-recorded event for SAG, with rumors of leaked winners floating around the internet, but still…it’s a televised guild award. That’s part of what we all live for here at Awards Radar, both in terms of readers and staff. So, it’s noteworthy. I’ve already said basically everything there is to say about the impending ceremony. As such, it’s simply a matter of waiting to see what the members of SAG do. Will they have some surprises in store for us? Anything is possible. Mostly, just sit back and enjoy the Screen Actors Guild having a unique version of their annual gala.
As previously mentioned here, it’s not likely to be a night that does a whole lot to change the Oscar landscape. At the same time, it could lead us down an interesting road, Academy-wise, as i wrote here:
I’ve already mentioned what to watch out for on Sunday, but the one thing that could be notable about SAG is that it’ll potentially confirm that The Trial of the Chicago 7 has completely faded. Going hand in hand with that, it’ll proof that Minari is hoping to come up the middle and pull off a massive upset. For what it’s worth, if Best Picture at the Oscars does come down to Minari, Nomadland, or Promising Young Woman, three independent features, none written or directed by white men, each the sort of film that would struggle in the past for even a nomination, that’s something special. Regardless of what you think of the movies, it would be a true marker of some of the change going on currently within the Academy.
