It’s the year 2020, and the nerds have taken over the world. Now it’s time for them to get their… revenge? Seth MacFarlane might not be the first name that comes to mind when you hear the word “nerd” but the multi-hyphenate is developing a reboot of the classic ’80s comedy Revenge of the Nerds for 20th Century Studios.
Perhaps the less surprising names attached to the project are Keith Lucas and Kenny Lucas, the identical twin scene-stealers who starred in 22 Jump Street before releasing their acclaimed stand-up special On Drugs to Netflix. The brothers, who also co-wrote and co-produced the current awards hopeful Judas and the Black Messiah, are set to star in the new film, which they’re co-writing with Alex Rubens (The Twilight Zone, Key and Peele). MacFarlane will produce alongside Erica Huggins, who brought the project to the brothers. (Editor’s Note: Keith Lucas and I were once co-writers at The Awards Circuit. He’s become far more successful than I.)
Being a nerd looks a very different way in 2020 than it did in 1984, and as Variety reports, this will be more of a reimagining than a remake of the original. That film, directed by Jeff Kanew, found success that led to multiple sequels and TV movies, but has received scrutiny in recent years for its problematic humor, including depictions of rape.
20th Century Fox initially tried to revive the property with an Adam Brody starring remake in 2006 that fell apart two weeks into production. 20th Century Studios hopes to have better luck this time around, as they attempt to bring a new modern spin to an outdated concept.
