Nominations Announced For the 11th Annual Critics Choice Documentary Awards

Here is the press release from CCA:

The Critics Choice Association (CCA) has announced the nominees for the 11th annual Critics Choice Documentary Awards (CCDA). The winners will be revealed at a gala event on Sunday, November 8, 2026 at The Edison Ballroom in Manhattan. Award-winning television host and producer Ross Mathews will emcee this year’s event, bringing together leading filmmakers, industry professionals, and special guests for an evening celebrating excellence in documentary filmmaking.

14th leads the pack with six nominations, including Best Documentary Feature. The film’s other nominations are Ava DuVernay for Best Director, Spencer Averick for Best Editing, and Jason Moran for Best Music Score, along with Best Political Documentary, and Best Historical Documentary.

“This year’s nominees reflect the range of voices, perspectives, and stories that make documentary filmmaking so compelling,” said Christopher Campbell, Critics Choice Association’s VP, Documentary. “These films challenge us to see the world in new ways and reinforce the vital role documentaries play in informing, engaging, and inspiring audiences. We are proud to recognize the exceptional talent and creativity behind this year’s nominated films.”

The CCA previously announced that Ron Howard will receive the Critics Choice Impact Award. The prestigious award recognizes filmmakers whose work, influence, and commitment to nonfiction storytelling have made a significant and lasting impact on the documentary form, broadening its reach and championing its continued evolution.

Visionary filmmaker Jehane Noujaim, previously announced as the recipient of the CCA’s Pennebaker Award, will have the honor presented by Pennebaker’s widow and collaborator, Chris Hegedus. Named in tribute to trailblazing documentarian D A Pennebaker, the award  (formerly the Critics Choice Lifetime Achievement Award) celebrates filmmakers whose careers have made a profound and lasting contribution to the art of documentary storytelling.

Feature-length documentaries, two-part documentaries, and short-form documentaries are eligible for nomination if first released commercially in the U.S. between January 1 and December 31, 2026. Documentaries may be delivered to audiences theatrically or by broadcast, cable, or streaming. Documentary series of three episodes or more are eligible for nomination if a majority of the episodes of the series’ eligible season have been released between January 1, 2026, and December 31, 2026. The awards ceremony is produced by Bob Bain of Bob Bain Productions.

National Geographic Documentary Films and Netflix are Catalyst Sponsors for the event.

Milagro Tequila is a sponsor of the event.
