Jay Duplass is both an actor and a filmmaker, so it goes without saying that he sees a role in a different manner than others. With I Play Rocky, Duplass also saw a chance to act in a film that depicts the making of his favorite film, Rocky. So, you won’t find someone more excited to be in this movie than him. All of that made it an absolute delight to chat with him once more. I’d previously spoken to him here, but today, he’s back to continue our week of I Play Rocky interviews. More are still to come, though we’ve already shared my chat with Tracy Letts here. Now, it’s Duplass’ turn.
In my review of the film from TIFF (here), I wrote about Duplass and his fellow cast members like so:
Anthony Ippolito is an uncanny Sylvester Stallone, channeling Sly in a way that never feels like an impression. This is soulful and funny work, from beginning to end. Ippolito is going to be a star, sure, but he might also end up an Oscar nominee for this one, he’s that good. Jay Duplass and Tracy Letts steal their scenes in very amusing supporting roles, while P.J. Byrne and Toby Kebbell also have their share of good scenes.
Below, you can see my conversation with Duplass. He plays John G. Avildsen in the flick, director of Rocky, and you’ll be able to easily tell how much he loves getting to play him. Portraying the helmer of your favorite movie? Yeah, it makes sense why Duplass is so delighted to have played Avildsen. Moreover, he talks about how playing him has benefitted him as a filmmaker. It’s a great discussion, one I really enjoyed making happen. I Play Rocky is about to hit theaters and will, if you’re like more or Duplass, prove to be an absolute blast.
Here now is my interview with I Play Rocky co-star Jay Duplass. Enjoy:
I Play Rocky opens in limited release on November 6th, with the wide release coming on November 20th!
