On day one of the new Skydance corporation, the company is already making a big (?) announcement: a new Transformers movie is in the works, with Paramount slating another reboot of the billion-dollar franchise. Instead of continuing the trajectory of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and crossover with the G.I. Joe franchise, Paramount is going back to Michael Bay, who is in early talks to return as director of what will be the eighth live-action film in the studio’s adaptations of Hasbro’s popular world.
Steven Spielberg will also return as executive producer, alongside Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto and Hasbro. Jason Fuchs has written a screenplay for a modern-day movie, but no other details have been unveiled yet. Bay directed the first five installments of the Transformers franchise, but stepped down after the fifth entry, Transformers: The Last Knight, which disappointed commercially. While past movies weren’t critically acclaimed, they were reliable commercial hits, totaling over $5.4 billion worldwide.
With Skydance merging with Paramount and Warner Bros., studio co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg met with Spielberg to discuss reinvigorating Transformers. The veteran filmmaker ultimately agreed to have a more hands-on role in the franchise, as he did with the first two films. Bay has been open to coming back for a while, but after meeting with Spielberg and reading the screenplay, he seems eager to return.
No release date or other announcements have been made, but keep an eye out soon, as Skydance continues to announce more projects.
