The awards season runs through a fixed timeline that slowly reveals who the favorites are in each ceremony. With the 84th annual Golden Globe Awards taking place on January 10, 2027, could this ceremony provide us with a way to understand who might win the main Oscars on March 14?
The Current Favorites for the Golden Globes
Early opinions suggest that Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey may sweep the board at the upcoming Golden Globes ceremony. It’s expected to be in the running in several categories, although the official nominations won’t be made until December 7
Other possible contenders in the Best Motion Picture – Drama category include La Bola Negra, Dune: Part Three, and Fjord. When we move to the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, we see potential nominees like Wild Horse Nine, The Debut, and The Invite.
Looking at the Best Actor category, names like Matt Damon, John Malkovich, and Ryan Gosling have all been mentioned. Meanwhile, among the possible contenders for Best Actress, we can see Julianne Moore, Olivia Wilde, and Inde Navarrette.
How the Prediction Markets Show the Current Implied Probability
Previously, anyone who wanted to predict the outcome of these awards ceremonies had to wait for the official nominations to be listed by betting companies. However, another option has emerged as prediction market platforms such as Kalshi have given us a new way to try and predict what might happen.
If we look at trending Kalshi markets, we can see sports, entertainment and other areas. Among them, the 2026 Golden Globes are listed. Specific markets include Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture and Best Screenplay. Each of these is listed with the current contract price, which tells us the implied probability of that outcome occurring, based on the trades made so far.
For example, at the time of writing, the market for Golden Globes Nominations: Best Screenplay has an implied probability of 35% for All of a Sudden. This means that each contract will pay out at 35 cents if this movie is nominated, but zero if it isn’t.
What Can We Learn from the Golden Globes?
To understand how the Golden Globes results may filter into the Oscars, we need to start by considering the major differences. The Golden Globes splits the Best Picture and acting categories into drama and comedy/musical awards, while the Oscars have a single Best Picture award. Comedies are typically among the films that lose out when the smaller number of contenders is announced for the Oscars.
It’s also interesting to note that the Golden Globes voting committee has historically leaned towards international and auteur-driven cinema, while the Oscars are often more weighted towards the year’s biggest blockbusters with strong technical performances. A possible reason for this comes from the different makeup of the committees, with the Golden Globes being decided by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Oscars by about 10,000 professionals from the movie industry.

So Can We Predict The Oscars From The Golden Globes?
The truth is that there are some major differences to bear in mind when deciding whether to use the Golden Globes as a way of determining what might happen at the Oscars ceremony. There’s definitely overlap, but it’s important to be aware of which way each awards organization tends to lean – for instance, if the Odyssey is beaten out by La Bola Negra at the Golden Globes, we can’t necessarily write it off for the Oscars.
