Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reached yet another milestone, and its momentum will likely leg out for the rest of the summer season. Following Avatar: The Way of Water and Ne Zha 2, the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film is the third in our post-COVID era to surpass the $2 billion mark, which bodes extremely well for Avengers: Doomsday, despite a relatively mixed reception for its promotional materials.
The film currently sits at $2.022 billion globally, making it the second-fastest movie to pass this milestone, following Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
There were lots of smaller-scale films released this weekend, but none of them could compete with the juggernauts of The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. David Robert Mitchell‘s The End of Oak Street, arguably the biggest title of the week, couldn’t face off against Spidey and Odysseus, despite having some IMAX screens at its disposal. The movie still opened with $21 million, which isn’t terrible considering the two films it was going up against, but it’s likely to fall short of turning a profit on its $80 million budget.
Another dinosaur-themed movie released this weekend was PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie, opening with $20.5 million domestically and $69 million globally, already recouping its small $40 million budget. Other movies include the proshot concerts of KATSEYE and SIX! The Musical, which respectively earned $4.0 million and $3.0 million domestically, while Angel Studios has another dud on their hands with The Brink of War.
Despite a well-mounted cast, the Michael Russell Gunn-directed movie opened with only $2.6 million domestically, proving once again that Angel’s market is quite limited and that they will occasionally have a win, even as they invest in attempts to rival the world’s majors. Next month, they are releasing what will likely be their biggest film, the Scott Waugh-directed Runner, starring Owen Wilson and Alan Ritchson, but can it compete with actual blockbusters? There’s only one way to find out…
