Despite the massive success of Barbie for all involved, both creatively and commercially, a Barbie 2 or whatever the sequel would be called has never been greenlit, despite everyone being interested. Well, with an end of the year deadline to get a new one in the works, it apparently, as always, comes down to money. More below.
According to Variety, David Zaslov and Warner Bros. have not approved the salary bumps that Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie are asking for. In turn, Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig are not sharing the idea they’ve come up with for the Barbie sequel with WB until they make a deal. So, a holding pattern has emerged, though if they can’t figure it out by December, the rights revert back to Mattel. So, this is one to keep an eye on.

This is a movie that made $1.5 billion at the box office, right? It literally overtook The Dark Knight as the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros. Pictures history?
And David Zaslav wants to nickel-and-dime the creatives behind that during sequel negotiations? Seriously?
It sure seems that way…
