Mike Leigh’s Next Film to Be His Last?

For decades, Mike Leigh has been making movies like no other. His deeply human, naturalistic, and largely improvisational films are singular works, which have gotten critical acclaim, art house fandom, and Academy Award nominations over the years. Well, it seems like Leigh’s next project is shaping up to be his last. More below.

According to IndieWire, Leigh has told those at a recent Golden Globes-hosted London roundtable that his new film, Tender Loving Care, is likely his final outing behind the camera. At 83 years old and suffering from myositis, movement has becoming difficult, rendering making a motion picture nearly impossible. His farewell as a filmmaker is going to be playing at the Toronto International Film Festival, with a prior premiere at the Telluride Film Festival seen as likely.

Hey Academy, here’s someone who has never received an honorary award from you, despite more than earning one!
