Interview: ‘Motor City’ Stars Alan Ritchson and Shailene Woodley Discuss the Offbeat Nature of Their Action Flick

Whenever a filmmaker asks their cast to take a leap of faith, I’m intrigued. There’s no question that Potsy Ponciroli was making a big ask when he went out to the cast of Motor City. That talent like Ben Foster, Alan Ritchson, and Shailene Woodley got the concept, believed in the execution, and combined with Ponciroli to make the movie work, that simply doesn’t happen that often. So, when given the opportunity to talk about the flick with Ritchson and Woodley, I jumped at the chance. As Motor City gets set to hit theaters this weekend, today brings my conversation with two of the stars.

In my review here of the film, I said the following about the cast, led by Ritchson and Woodley:

Alan Ritchson cuts an impressive frame, with his massive size, but he also turns in a strong performance by letting this force of vengeance have a notable soft side. His hard exterior mixes with an emotional core that invests you in his quest for justice. Ritchson would obviously be in demand for more straightforward action, but it speaks to his tastes that he opted for something like this instead. Shailene Woodley does some very nice eye acting as she slowly showcases an agency perhaps not expected. Ritchson and Woodley have a palpable chemistry together.

Below, you can see my discussion with Ritchson and Woodley. We didn’t have too long to chat, and this actually happened the day after I had to put my dog to sleep, so I was a little drained and out of it, but grateful for the distraction. As you’ll see, both of them were happy to talk about the film, glad to be discussing it, and eager for audiences to see it. After having played at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, that moment comes this weekend, as it enters theatrical release. If you like Ritchson and/or Woodley, you’ll get to see them doing something different here, which is very much the case with something like Motor City, up and down the line.
