Dwayne Johnson to Star in ‘Free Byrd’ for ‘Sing Sing’ Filmmaker Greg Kwedar

While The Smashing Machine may not have achieved its full commercial or critical goals, ultimately missing more awards nominations than it received, the film certainly has unlocked Dwayne Johnson to some interesting filmmakers. Not only is he working again with Benny Safdie, he has a Hawaiian gangster project with Martin Scorsese in the hopper. Now, Johnson can add Academy Award nominee Greg Kwedar to the mix. More below.

According to Variety, Johnson will star in Free Byrd for Kwedar. He’ll play a motorcycle stuntman who conceals his dementia diagnosis from everyone in his life, including his mechanic brother, as he risks everything for one final jump. Kwedar is directing and rewriting the screenplay, which originally came from Jon Boyer, with another draft by Michael Schwartz and Tyler Nilson. Stay tuned for more on this one as it develops.
