From internet comedian to global superstar, Curry Barker‘s career has been on an incredible trajectory since his debut film, Obsession, hit screens on May 15th, 2026.
It has been rumoured that his next film will remain in the horror genre, as he is set to release a supernatural horror-comedy about two fake paranormal investigators who discover a terrifying real-life entity.
In many ways, it is very smart of Barker to keep directing horror films. It is an incredibly popular genre, which has been demonstrated by the success of Obsession, which grossed over $339 million worldwide.
As a whole, the global horror film market size was valued at $128.72 billion in 2026 – and that’s just in movies as well, not even accounting for the thousands of popular horror movie games that have spawned over the years. Horror has even transcended to the world of iGaming, where Ghost Slider and Blade & Fangs are top online slots to play.
While horror is very popular amongst audiences, it can often be poorly received by critics who refer to ‘cookie-cutter cliches’ within the genre. That’s why it takes a talented director to elevate a horror film to both commercial success and critical acclaim.
This has been done in recent years with Jordan Peele, Ari Aster, and Robert Eggers, all of whom have produced incredibly popular films that have also been well received amongst fans and critics alike.
Curry Barker is the latest director to produce an incredibly popular film that’s highly rated on sites such as Letterboxd, Rotten Tomatoes, and IMDb. So how did Barker get to this point, and where does he go from here?
YouTube Personality to Filmmaker
Barker started his career on YouTube, where he created the sketch comedy channel “that’s a bad idea” with his creative partner Cooper Tomlinson, whom he met while studying acting at the New York Film Academy.
They gained millions of views on YouTube with the surrealistic brand of character comedy, which featured hilarious scenarios and often featured Tomlinson and Barker getting into humorous disputes.
He then gained his mainstream breakthrough with his found-footage horror film Milk & Serial, a completely DIY film, which was made on a budget of only $800. While Hollywood was skeptical about distributing the film, it was a huge success, proving to the industry that he could gain an audience.
This helped Barker to get Obession greenlit, which proved to be a huge global success, and opened the door for Barker to keep directing films in horror.
What Do We Know About Barker’s Next Film?
Anything But Ghosts is set to be released in 2027 and is set to star Barker himself, alongside Tomlinson as the two main scam artists posing as paranormal investigators.
It is also going to have a star-studded cast of Aaron Paul, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Violet McGraw, which already suggests that Barker will have a much higher budget to work with than his previous films.
Hopefully, with more money behind the project, Barker will continue to make another high-quality horror film.
