Box Office Report for the Week of June 7

To the surprise of nobody, the latest installment in the Scary Movie franchise is at the top spot of the weekend box office after an eventful shakeup by Backrooms and Obsession. Curry Barker’s feature debut is still breaking records as the fourth weekend of all time for any horror movie, while having surpassed the $200 million mark at the global box office. Backrooms, on the other hand, has officially become A24’s highest-grossing movie ever, making over $200 million at the global box office, despite dropping at 69% this weekend with the one-two punch of Scary Movie and Masters of the Universe.

While Michael Tiddes’ requel of Scary Movie received abysmal reviews from critics (it currently sits at 26% on Rotten Tomatoes), it’s certainly not stopping audiences from seeing this long-awaited sixth (or third, depending on your appreciation of Scary Movie 3-5, which were not helmed by any of the Wayans brothers) entry in the highly successful parody franchise. In one weekend, it has already become the highest-grossing Scary Movie ever, surpassing the $105 million mark globally and grossing over $55 million domestically. With a price tag of $30 million, it has already become of the most successful films of the year, and one of Paramount’s biggest commercial hits of 2026, following Scream 7 (this is a bit ironic, isn’t it?).

For Masters of the Universe, Travis Knight’s reinterpretation of one of Mattel’s flagship franchises isn’t off to the numbers Amazon and MGM Studios would’ve hoped, despite mostly positive word of mouth from both critics and audiences. While the film opened at the second spot with a $29.3 million domestic tally and $54 million globally, the movie’s hefty $170-200 million price tag will make it difficult for Amazon to turn a profit on this, despite wanting to reinvigorate interest in one of their most prized intellectual properties in the hopes of turning it into a franchise. It looks like it might follow the same vein as Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, where a cross-media franchise was planned but ultimately canceled after the film underperformed.

In other news, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has finally surpassed the $1 billion mark, becoming the first 2026 movie to reach that milestone. The box office is currently the healthiest it has been since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it looks like more studios are going to invest in cinemas than in streaming services over the past few years. The only one who still tries to resist is Netflix, but the tide may turn much sooner than later…

Here is the full list of the top ten films of the weekend:
