Interview: Discussing ‘Stewart Fails to Save the Universe’ with John Ross Bowie

I really enjoyed The Big Bang Theory. Now, I know it wasn’t prestige television, but when you see 300-350 movies a year like I do, you often want some passive TV on at home. For me, this was one of, and still remains, the go-to show for eating dinner alongside, or just having on while writing. That might seem like damning with faint praise, but it speaks to the homey vibe it had. Amongst the supporting cast of that show, John Ross Bowie often made me laugh as lovable creep Barry Kripke. So, when I saw that he was one of the characters getting to be a central part of the high concept spinoff Stewart Fails to Save the Universe, my interest was piqued. As the series is revealing itself currently, and just recently was picked up for a second season, I had the opportunity to get on Zoom with Bowie to talk all things Barry and the show. Today, that conversation comes your way.

For those unaware, the official synopsis for Stewart Fails to Save the Universe is as follows:

Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (Brian Posehn), and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie). Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we’ve come to know and love from The Big Bang Theory. As the title implies, things don’t go well.

Below, you can hear my discussion with Bowie. We had a lot of fun, as he was very generous with his time, so there’s an even more casual nature to this back and forth than can sometimes be the case with shorter conversations. In fact, we were chatting and laughing even before I started recording, so you’re picking this up with us already knee deep in chatter. You’ll hear all about playing Barry Kripke, the differences between making The Big Bang Theory and Stewart Fails to Save the Universe, and plenty more. He’s funny, smart, and eager to sell you on the show, all while displaying a refreshing sense of honesty. It all makes for a really great conversation, whether you’re familiar with the show or not. Stewart Fails to Save the Universe is currently streaming on HBO Max, so be sure to give it a shot…
