After Greta Gerwig‘s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew vacated its Thanksgiving spot in favor of a longer, 45-day traditional release in February, there was speculation about which movie would take its place. It turns out that Netflix had another trick up its sleeve in an attempt to embrace theatrical exhibition for some of its higher-profile films, after Ted Sarandos vowed to become a champion of theatrical distribution in his failed attempt to acquire Warner Bros. library.
Today, they announced that David Fincher’s latest film will debut in IMAX theatres globally on November 26, before arriving on Netflix a month later, on December 23. The film will have exclusivity for two weeks in IMAX, and a potential theatrical rollout in regular cinemas will likely follow before making its way to the streaming platform.
There were rumors that the film would be released in the summer, but it looks like Netflix wants to position this movie, which was original titled The Adventures of Cliff Booth (though likely to change, as it’s not mentioned in Netflix’s press release), as a major awards contender. This makes sense, considering that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and saw Brad Pitt win Best Supporting Actor for his turn as Cliff Booth.
Pitt returns as the film’s protagonist, with Elizabeth Debicki, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Holt McCallany, Corey Fogelmanis, Karren Karagulian, Timothy Olyphant, and Peter Weller rounding up the cast. The movie’s screenplay was written by Quentin Tarantino, and it will mark Pitt’s first collaboration with Fincher since 2008’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
A trailer for the movie premiered during the Super Bowl, but it has never been officially released by Netflix. Is the “streaming-only” dam slowly breaking, especially after Gerwig landed IMAX exclusivity and a compelling window for her Narnia adaptation? Fincher may be the first of many filmmakers to ask for a proper theatrical release and finally have Netflix become true champions of the big screen once and for all.
