Interview: Nick Kroll Talks ‘Mating Season’ and the Balancing Act of His Animated Comedies

Nick Kroll knows what’s funny. He also knows what’s just ever so slightly shy of going over the line. Watch any episode of Big Mouth and you’ll see that. He really impressed me with that show, as well as with his latest Netflix animated show, Mating Season. Last year, Kroll was also very solid in the dark comedy I Don’t Understand You (reviewed here), while just a few weeks ago he stole scenes in Roommates (reviewed here). Now, with Mating Season about to drop on Netflix, Kroll is here to chat about the show.

Mating Season is very much a show for anyone who enjoys Kroll’s humor, especially in the Big Mouth lens. I find it consistently amusing to see how Kroll pushes the limit, while still knowing where the line is. That’s very much what makes him a comedian of note and someone Netflix wants to continue being in business with. Mating Season is just more evidence of that talent.

Below, you can see my conversation with Kroll. We kick off by discussing his part in Roommates a bit, before zeroing in on Mating Season. It was very interesting to hear about his balancing act when deciding what’s right for his shows, especially since we’ve seen a musical version of Disclosure on Big Mouth, for example. Listening to his thought process is fascinating to me, while thinking about it through the lens of his new show is very conducive to a discussion. Mating Season is about to drop on Netflix this weekend, so if you like Big Mouth, this show will also tickle you pink. If you like Kroll, you’re bound to like this new animated comedy, which he created and also provides a voice for.

Here now is my interview with Mating Season creator Nick Kroll. Enjoy:

Mating Season drops on Netflix tomorrow!
