Barry Levinson has more or less done it all, including reach the height of filmmaking, prize-wise. He has an Academy Award for directing Rain Man, his one win among six Oscar nominations. As I wrote about here (for his film The Survivor) when previously interviewing him, that credit would be enough to establish anyone as a top tier talent, but he also has a ton more under his belt. Diner, Good Morning, Vietnam, The Natural, and Wag the Dog is just more evidence of how good a filmmaker Levinson is. One of his seminal works is also Sleepers, which is in the process of celebrating its 30th anniversary. With the movie having gotten a 4K re-release this week, he’s been doing some press in support of the flick. Last week, we sat down on Zoom for another discussion, this time about the legacy of Sleepers. Today, that conversation comes your way.
Below, you can see my Sleepers discussion with Levinson. He’s eager to revisit the work on a number of levels, including just the longevity of the film, alongside his career on the whole. One of the things I remarked on was how well cast the movie is, especially in being a part of what made someone like Brad Pitt into the massive star he would become. It also marks one of several collaborations with Robert De Niro, which we touch on as well. I always enjoy chatting with Levinson, and this is no exception, so hopefully you all get the same kick out of him that I do. If you haven’t seen Sleepers recently or have yet to ever watch it, now is a perfect opportunity to rectify that…
Here now is my interview with Sleepers filmmaker Barry Levinson. Enjoy:
