Interview: Legendary UConn Women’s Basketball Coach Geno Aurirmma Reflects on His Career and the Documentary Series ‘The Dynasty: UConn Huskies’

When it comes to career longevity, it’s hard to top Geno Auriemma. As I told him during this interview, he got his job as the head coach of the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team two years before I was born, and I’m turning 40 next year. Twelve national championships later, among a host of other awards and bonafides, and Auriemma is a legend. So, the fact that Apple has produced The Dynasty: UConn Huskies that looks at how he’s done what he’s done just makes sense. With the three part documentary series dropping this Friday, I was recently given some time to talk to Auriemma about it all. We didn’t have much time together, but I think we made the most of it, and today, I’m thrilled to bring our chat to you all.

The Dynasty: UConn Huskies is a three part documentary series looking at this epic basketball program. Directed by Matthew Hamachek and Erica Sashin, they take you inside the most dominant program in college basketball history, male or female. It’s an inside look at how coach Geno Auriemma pushes his players to be their best, with the end result being a dozen national titles and counting. Among the players Auriemma has coached, we see and hear from the likes of Rebecca Lobo, Diana Taurasi, Paige Bueckers, and many more. They all speak to how Auriemma has built a one of a kind dynasty, raising UConn basketball to previously unseen heights.

Below, you can see my conversation with Auriemma. Again, with such a limited window for our discussion, I think we were able to get to more than you might expect. My focus here was getting him to reflect on his career, what the series means to him, and how being a teacher for all of his student athletes is perhaps the most important part of his coaching career. Listening to Auriemma talk about anything would be fascinating, but getting him to do something coaches rarely are afforded the opportunity to do, which is look back, made this extra special.
