Box Office Report for the Week of April 12

To the surprise of no one, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie continues its forward momentum as the year’s highest-grossing movie and remains at the top of the weekend box office, with a $69 million domestic tally. It marks a very nice 48% drop for the sequel, proving that critical reviews did not affect the movie’s commercial reception whatsoever.

Currently, its global tally sits at $629 million, which means its run could end at the $900 million – $1 billion mark if it continues building until Michael takes over the top spot.

It was also a great weekend for mid-budget fare, starting with Kat Coiro‘s You, Me & Tuscany, which garnered $8 million on a $19 million budget, signaling a relatively healthy marketplace for romantic comedies, a subgenre of films that has sadly been relegated to streaming services ever since the COVID-19 pandemic.

More impressively, independently produced movies have made a significant splash in cinemas this weekend, with Daniel Goldhaber’s remake of Faces of Death becoming one of IFC Films’ highest-grossing movies, opening at $1.7 million domestically on a $7.4 million budget.

Genki Kawamura‘s adaptation of Exit 8 has also made quite the debut this weekend, opening at $1.4 million in 495 theatres, an excellent debut for one of the buzziest titles that premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, which NEON acquired after significant praise. The studio plans to expand the movie to more theatres next week, which will likely yield a higher result as word of mouth continues to grow.

Here is the full list of the top ten films of the weekend:

  1. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (Universal): $69.0M (-48%) – 4,284 theatres
  2. Project Hail Mary (Amazon MGM Studios): $24.5M (-23%) – 3,817 theatres
