From ‘Secretariat’ to ‘Seabiscuit’: The Horse Racing Movies That Deserved Awards Recognition

There are few sports that have a greater power of being custom-made for the big screen than horse racing. Sometimes stories that are unimaginable play out on track, even defying realism in some aspects.

That is one of the key reasons why fans are always drawn to the sport, as it gives followers an opportunity to dream of the impossible. That will once again be the case when the Triple Crown gets underway in the United States in May, as millions across the world will be making their 2026 Kentucky Derby picks

But, what are some of the horse racing movies that deserve award recognition for the stories that they have been able to tell?

Seabiscuit

One of the most celebrated horse racing movies of the modern era is ‘Seabiscuit’, released in 2003. The much-loved film focuses on the life of the legendary equine of the same name, who was able to improve the mood of the nation throughout the Great Depression.

An A-List cast stars in the flick, with Tobey Maguire portraying the legendary jockey John Pollard, and Jeff Bridges starring as Charles Howard. The film follows the life of Seabiscuit as well as the legendary jockey, with both stars overcoming huge challenges to reach the peak of the sport.

It is a beautiful story of how a relationship between a human and horse can conquer all. Seabiscuit was nominated for seven awards at the 76th Academy Awards, but ultimately came up short to The Lord Of The Ring: The Return of the King in all categories. However, the film remains one of the highest-rated horse racing movies available, and its message is as important now as it has ever been.

Secretariat

Another film about one of the most inspiring equine figures in horse racing history comes in the form of ‘Secretariat’. This film was released in 2010, and was directed by Randall Wallace.

The movie focuses on the life of the legendary Triple Crown winner, with Diane Lane starring as Secretariat’s famous owner Penny Chenery, who was tasked with taking over the stable of her ailing father with a lack of knowledge of the sport.

The film is as much about Chenery’s challenge to dominate in a male-oriented sport, and helping train the first winner of the Triple Crown in 25 years. It is also a sport about an equine, written off by many, reaching the pinnacle.

John Malkovich stars as trainer Lucien Laurin, while other famous actors that star include James Cromwell, Kevin Connolly, and Scott Glenn. Secretariat was a huge success at the box office, gaining favourable reviews and earning $60 million.

Ride Like A Girl

There is potentially few more inspiring horse racing movies for young girls that are dreaming of becoming a professional jockey than ‘Ride Like A Girl’. This 2019 release follows the true story of Michelle Payne, who revealed at a young age that she one day dreamed of winning the Melbourne Cup.

It is a unique film in the way that documentary footage is also included at both ends of the movie, including the clip in which Payne states her dream of winning the famous race at Flemington. Teresa Palmer stars as the leading character, while legendary actor Sam Neil portrays Paddy Payne.

Payne’s story is one of the most iconic in Australian racing history, and was brought into focus once again in 2025 after Jamie Melham became the second female rider to win the nation’s most famous race. The film was also quoted after the legendary win of Rachael Blackmore in the 2021 Grand National, becoming the first female rider to win the race when aboard Minella Times.

Dream Horse

Few races have the power to tell a story greater than the Grand National, and that is at the heart of sports comedy-drama film Dream Horse. The 2020 release follows the story of a Welsh community that begin a syndicate in the hope of winning a big race.

The film is the true story of Dream Alliance, who would defy setbacks to win the Welsh Grand National. It follows Welsh barmaid Jan Vokes, who breeds the horse before convincing her neighbours to get involved with training costs. Dream eventually comes through the ranks due to his determination, to win the biggest race in Wales.

The film stars major actors such as Damian Lewis, Joanna Page, and Steffan Rhodri. Unlike many other horse racing movies, a staggering 62% of the box office audience for the movie was made up of females, with 85% of those being over the age of 25. Based on his unlikely success, Dream Alliance was one of the big stories heading into the Grand National, but he was eventually ruled out due to injury, and he was later retired in 2012.
