Watching La Grazia, you can’t help but feel like the politician that Toni Servillo is playing just no longer exists. The days of a dignified and moral leader just is gone, especially here in the states. You also can’t help but revel in how good Servillo is, working once again with Paolo Sorrentino. Recently, I hopped on Zoom with Servillo to discuss the film. Now, with the movie about to hit theaters, I’m thrilled to share our conversation with you all.
In my review of the film here, I spoke of Servillo’s performance like so:
Toni Servillo, a longtime collaborator with Sorrentino, turns in an amazing performance. He’s played Italian leaders before, including the wilder Silvio Berlusconi, but here, he finds a soulful depiction of a President. Watching Servillo depict something as novel as dignity in a politician is truly a sight to behold. Even just when he comes to his final decisions, his rationale is exactly what you hope for in a head of state thinking about the future. Servillo blew me away.
Below, you can hear my interview with Servillo. You’ll also hear his interpreter Alessandra on the Zoom call, who makes me sound so much smarter in Italian than I am in English. We get into why the flick spoke to him, what it means to play a politician, and how he feels about acting in general. It’s a fascinating chat, one more than befitting a heady work like this one. La Grazia is in theaters tomorrow, so if you’re at all curious, be sure to check it out…
