Making any kind of animated project is a truly Herculean task. Being able to depict anything is both a blessing and a curse. As In Your Dreams director and co-writer Alex Woo says in our chat, “with great power comes great responsibility.” That applies to a filmmaker, not just Spider-Man. Earlier in the week, Woo and I hopped on Zoom to gab about the flick. With the movie now streaming on Netflix, I’m delighted to share our discussion with you all.
In my review here of the film, I said the following about Woo’s work:
Filmmaker Alex Woo shows his Pixar roots with his feature debut, though it has a slightly quirkier feel at times. Woo’s direction, as well as the screenplay he co-wrote with his co-director Erik Benson, thrives when the dream world is being utilized. A sequence in which the kids use trial and error within nightmares is a hoot, as is the introduction to Baloney Tony. Benson and Woo also add some genuine emotion to the third act, keeping things from ever getting repetitive.
Below, you can hear my conversation with Woo. We talk a lot about the process of making animation, the time it takes, as well as what it means to be done with a project like In Your Dreams. We also get into how he handles tone, what depicting imagination is like, and all things in between. Woo is a delight and we could have gone on for an hour, so even with this brief talk, we get into plenty. You can now see the film on Netflix, so make sure you check it out, as it’s a very fun and engaging bit of animation.

Here now is my interview with In Your Dreams director/co-writer Alex Woo. Enjoy:
